Jim Harper's style is often impressionistic, creating landscapes half real, half fantasy, with bold colors that swirl and dance together. His background in sculpture predisposes him to a hands-on approach to materials which often finds him escewing the brush to directly work the paint with his hands. This gives his canvases a rich, textured surface where the colors sometimes mix, sometimes overlay one another in a visual ballet.
When you look at Harper's paintings you find that there are many levels which reveal themselves over time. Small sections of the complex surface often reveal their own micro landscapes to inhabit.
Light is always an important part of Harper's works. How the sunlight paints the clouds and creates the interplay of bright colors in a sunrise. The way the haze of the early morning modulates the colors of distant mountains. Even the patterns created by the pinpoints of light in the dark shadows of nighttime.
